"Re-Gifting Christmas" - Bishop Mike Coyner

Have you ever re-gifted? Have you ever received a gift which was not something you wanted to keep, so at a future event you wrapped up that same gift and gave it to someone else? That is known as “re-gifting” and probably most of us have done it. Marsha and I attended a party last night which included “White Elephant” gifts, and I suspect all of those items were re-gifted, and that was part of the fun.

Thanksgiving Wisdom for Hard Times

“Thanksgiving Wisdom for Hard Times” - by Bishop Michael Coyner

I have just returned from the fall meeting of the General Council on Finance and Administration (GCFA) of our denomination. You might expect that such a meeting during these hard economic times would have been discouraging. Not at all. There was realism. There were plans laid to deal with decreasing finances (although to date, the giving to general church apportionments is actually higher this year than last year in terms of both real dollars and percentages), and there was great concern expressed that we keep the focus upon ministry and mission. Many expressed worries about our local churches and our annual conferences, and of course our general church apportionment formula includes an adjustment for economic conditions, so that during hard times the level of general church apportionments to the conferences and local churches actually drops.

Mostly the overall attitude was positive, hopeful, and faithful. The tone was perhaps best expressed by the following bit of what I would call “Thanksgiving Wisdom for Hard Times” that was shared by Dr. Byrd Bonner, the Director of the United Methodist Foundation.

Get Ready to Pray - by Bishop Mike Coyner

“Get Ready to Pray” – September 26, 2008

When we gather on October 4th for our historic Special Session of the two Conferences here in Indiana to take the final votes on becoming the new Indiana Conference, we will also enter into a special week of prayer. That week of prayer, from October 5-11, is being encouraged by a group of pastors from some of the largest United Methodist congregations in the United States. They recently gathered to talk about how they can help lead our denomination forward, and they are recommended that we all commit ourselves to a week of prayer.

At our Special Session on October 4th, we will be asking those present and all United Methodist people in Indiana to join in that week of prayer. Here are the daily prayers for the week of October 5-11. Please join me in this week of prayer:
